How complex is IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946

How complex is IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946??? I don't have a flight stick and don't want to buy one. I am going to play this game on keyboard/mouse. I've had this game for a while cus of a Steam weekend deal and haven't played it yet. I played Battlestation: Midway this past weekend and want to get into some more WWII flight stuff but don't want to get all hardcore into them and just want to have some fun and since I already have the game I want to play it. I read there are lower realism levels as well but I'm just waiting for Steam to finish downloading it. Are there any necessary mods that I should get?

Don't bother.

I mean, if you already have the game, try it out, but you're probably not going to be any good without a joystick. In fact you probably won't be any good even with a joystick. IL-2, really is a simulator. You can't go in playing like you would in Ace Combat. You can't make any sort of hard turn without stalling... hell you can't do a lot things without stalling.

It's a fun game that has a steep learning curve.

Personally if I wanted to play an arcade shooter, I'd play an arcade shooter, not a flight sim with all the realism settings turned down. Even if you already have to game, it's not worth it to spend the time learning how to play if you're never going to play it properly anyway.

Like guys said here, without a joystick and rudder pedals, your a$$ will be handed to you every time you take off (taking off a plane takes some time to learn as well) I've played the original IL-2 game for months and still couldn't beat some of the online gamers. Those ace guys knew how to turn without bleeding energy, maintain the speed and do some precise shooting. If I managed to shoot someone down, it made my day.

Indeed. It's a hard simulator that doesn't hold your hand. IIl-2 also has some quirks such as the planes tend to violently tip stall in turns. To play it at vary minimum you need something like an Xbox 360 controller. Something that allows for analogue rudder control. I recommend picking up Microsoft Flight Simulator first as it will teach you how to fly, rather than going at it blindly.

Good luck. I played the earlier versions for a year or two with a joystick and was getting me arse handed to me on the full settings. Don't waste your time with just a mouse and keyboard.

I was always getting pwnd because some of the aces were so good and it always seemed like I was getting out climbed by every plane in the game.

@ OP, if you want an arcadey WW2 flight sim, checkout Heroes of the Pacific.

It can be toned down to an almost arcade level, but you still need a joystick of some kind, preferably with a rudder.
