How compatible are later versions of the Genesis?

I've seen some portable versions of the Sega Genesis, and found myself wondering how compatible these are with games?

I actually own a Sega Genesis 3 home system, which I got on clearance at a clothing store back in the late 90's. Other than not having
a headphone jack, it seems to work with any cartridge that I throw at it....

Do you mean the Sega Nomad? Or modern handhelds?

The Nomad is literally Genesis hardware in a (big, battery munching) handheld. The modern ones are generally just ARM systems running emulators, with all the compatibility problems that entails.

I remember the Nomad, but I think it was newer than that, with some built in games, and an SD card slot for adding more. Now that I'm looking them up, they were from atgames, and evidently there were several different version of them over the years. Older ones with red/black, and another year with a white casing.

I can't seem to find any new ones any more, but there are used ones popping up for sale for under $50 here and there.

I have one of the atgames genesis models, pretty sure it was the one in the red box w/ Sonic on the front. It may as well be unplayable because of latency. Pretty sure it was $50 new as well. This would have been around 2015-2016.
