How common are dead pixels?

I bought a nice Samsung LCD from CompUSA last week that has a single dead pixel. I'm the kind of guy who finds this very annoying. Although I didn't pay the $70 for the replacement guarantee, I have gotten verbal confirmation over the phone that they will let me exchange it for another one of the same model. However, I'm concerned that if it is a very common problem the new one will be worse. It's a "known evil" situation. Should I take a chance? I don't believe that I will have more than one opportunity to do the exchange.

You should take it back and exchange, then ask them if you can buy the replacement guarantee. I bought the 213T from Best Buy and have used the warrantee twice for dead pixels. When I'm paying that much for a panel it needs to be right regardless of how many times I have to exchange it. The worst scenario is when the dead pixel is right in the middle.

I'm 3 for 3 on getting a single dead pixel on the LCD's I've bought. All have come out of the box with a single dead pixel near one of the corners of the screen.

If it's out of the way (like all three of mine have been), then I wouldn't bother exchanging it.

That does suck and it looks hideous as well. I had one at work like that and it was annoying to use.

I had to exchange my first NEC 1765 because of a dead pixel right in the middle of the panel, the one I received in exchange is now a year old and has no pixel problems...I would vote to exchange it out and see how that one turns out.
