I've got seasons tickets to the Canucks, and I hear the American National Anthem constantly. Whether it be watching a game on TV or listening to it on the radio.

How come every half decent vocalist tries to put their own particular twist in it, and inevitably screws it up or makes it sound terrible?

I think the American National Anthem is a good patriotic anthem, but PEOPLE, YOU AREN'T MAKING THE SONG BETTER, sing it like it was meant to be sang.

I'm not talking about the crowd singing, I'm talking about the theatre vocalist.

Because the people they generally get to do it are tools, and think they're somehow better than everybody else, and that we'll like their rendition. It's sad, but it's almost become a tradition of its own.

It's not too bad most of the time, haven't really heard anyone butcher it. But God Bless America, I hate that song, there's no voice in the world that could make it any good for me.

No kidding. Hell, half of them don't even have the courtesy to learn the words before hand...

Oh, and Rosanne Barr should have been shot for her notorious effort.

Actually I would agree. Most of these singers think they are all that and a bag of chicken. They think they can add their little flair to it and make it sound good. They are wrong.

There are many who do an excellent job such as Josh Groban

I so agree (even though i still think you're a douche)! The US national anthem is great, but so many vocalists need to add their own 'twist' to it and it just ruins it.

You mean "harpooned".

One example I can think of regarding someone who made it better was the late Marvin Gaye.

I agree. The best version is the one by Whitney Houston sung during halftime during one of the Super Bowls ages ago. Traditional, powerful, and correct lyrics.

ETA - Whitney Houston's version from 1991 Super Bowl

Yeah. They need to show off their vocal ability to the crowd.

Hehe...I listen to Neal Boortz sometimes on my drive in to work and he refers to the hip-hop and R&B artists who butcher the national anthem as "urban yodelers".
