How come when something happens..more of it follows?

To clarify: when a priest was found molesting children, more and more and more were caught doing the same thing. Recently, many teachers have been caught having sexual relations with children, like...a lot of them.

Is this because we're ignorant of what's going on until something major happens, or is it because more people come forward once it does happen, since they know they're not alone?

Both... plus technology lets people leave incriminating evidence EVERYWHERE.

I think it's all about money, and news is a form of entertainment. If a lot of people like a movie or TV show then the hollywood people want to make a sequel or another movie/show with a similar plot so they can continue to make more money by milking the same idea that has been sucessful in the past. So if news story XYZ got an extra 10% ratings that week then news people want to find more stories like XYZ to get more people to watch their network. Higher ratings = more profits off commercials, bigger sponsors etc...
