How come the size of a video increases when I import it to Nero?

I am using Nero to burn DVDs with the BenQ1655 that I just got. And when I import a 700MB .AVI movie into nero it says that it is like 5GBs and has to resize it and loose the quality. Why is this?
 
It's trying to convert the video to MPEG2 so that it can be burned in DVD format. You're better off converting it yourself and then burning it as DVD video. Depending on the resolution, a 700MB avi should come out to about 1.4GB in MPEG2.
