How come some old cars don't have head rests.

I have seen some cars from the 80's, and whole lot of them from the 60's and 70's which do not have head rests. Actually, I think the older Mercedes' didn't have them either. I just don't get it. A head rest is nothing more than foam with cloth or leather on it, attached to the car seat. How difficult or costly could it have been to have that in cars back then?

Maybe it was considered out of style and its usefulness in safety wasn't proven...

Head rests and seat belt were Federally mandated. I do not recall the year. The shoulder belt came a few years later. Seat belts were retro-fitted to cars by Cal state law also.
Most drivers hated the early head rests because they blocked the view when looking over their right shoulder. Most were pulled out and put in the trunk...

Hey Einstein.....things change and evolve over time, maybe a time traveller from the past would ask the reverse question. Did you ever notive that cars before 1966 didn't come with seat belts unless they were ordered......geesh, how much could it have cost, why wouldn't everyone have wanted one!!!!!!!

Cuz headrests sux0r? Who needs a neck anyways, i say if you get in an accident you deserve to have you head snapped off.

same reason seatbelts and airbags didn't appear in cars until way way after their invention. people didn't care all that mucha bout safety, gov regulation had to force hands. and take a look at the history of seatbelt use, people are stupid. headrests? whiplash? who cares 🙂

Why would they? It's not like your head ever actually touches the headrest.

No.....it smashes into it when you're rear-ended at 60MPH on the expressway 😛.

Happened to my next door neighbor who used to have a 95 Talon that was rear-ended by a E150 cargo van while she was stopped in construction traffic on the expressway. She was just around a bend in the road, and the van hardly slowed down before hitting her. I saw pics of the car afterwards - let's just say it's a miracle she lived. Without a headrest, her melon would have popped off, flew out the back window, bounced off the spoiler, and landed on the van who hit her.

I've always wondered about the lack of headrests in the old cars too. Methinks there were some nasty neck breakings in rear end accidents before those were mandated :Q.
