I found that fishy whenever I see a car listed for sale with low 100k miles. So you mean to tell me a 1991 Acura integra (20 years old) have only 100k miles on it o_O

Meanwhile on autotrader a 2006-2007 cars have nearly 100k miles on them.

when i bought my 1988 CRX 4 years ago it has 139,000kms(86,000 miles) on it. Had insurance and full maintinance records to prove it. Selling that car was a bad idea but it wasnt exactly a off road vehicle with towing capacity which is what i needed more than good fuel mileage.

It was owned by a old lady that only put 40,000kms on it for the 12 years she owned it so that helped, i was the third owner, i bought it from a cop who was the second owner.

That's probably because the 1991 Acuras with 200-300k have...

1) been totaled in an accident
2) gotten driven into the ground and were scrapped instead of sold
3) been traded in on a new car because they'd get $500 for the trade, or $500 if they sold it

I bought a Ford Tempo that was 13 years old but it only had about 72k miles. Within a year the whole damn thing fell apart. AC stopped working, suspension broke, brakes were extremely biased to one side and to the front, EGR valve problems, exhaust rattled after a while, etc.

It was a car my aunt and uncle kept at their vacation home on the other side of the country. Only used in summer driving, only in the vacation area. No city miles, basically.

your situation is very similar to my mine...

...i purchased my 1994 Toyota in 2007. at the time she only had 37,000 miles on the clock. that averages out to ~2850 miles/year with the previous owner. i'm the 2nd owner, and the first was a doctor's wife who actually cared for and maintained her over the years...otherwise i wouldn't have purchased from these folks.

lots of older cars only have 5 digit odometers. conveniently if they're showing 05673 or whatever it's always 105673 instead of 305673 or 405673 according to the seller. whenever we get old crap like that we just appraise it based upon condition and "miles unknown".

Depends who owned it. If it was a little old lady, it won't have much on it. My old 1989 Mazda 626 was bought off my Grandma back in 2003. Only had 86,000km on it at the time.

I think many cars tend to break down and need repairs that cost more than the vehicle is worth at some point between 100-200K miles.... So, you don't see very many cars with 200K+ on them, as the are just not that common.

That said, they are a LOT more common now than they were 10+ years ago... I remember when 100K was a major milestone back in the 80s... many cars back then wouldn't survive even that long....

My Grandmother had a 1999 Volvo that was totaled in 2008. When it was totaled it had 13,000 miles on it. And that is with a trip from Dallas, TX to Provincetown, MA and back.

I think there's sort of an opposite bell-curve when it comes to car mileage. There are cars for people who drive and cars for people who don't drive. Many of the early 90's cars that were driven are gone now, due to massive mileage, crashes, sold to Mexico, etc. The grandma cars are all that are left, and even they have 100K.

It's more common than you think depending on where you live. I have a clean titled 99 Acura that has only 110K miles. Only put about 10k miles per year on it. That's with highway driving mostly too. Most newer cars I see listed for sale seem to have higher mileage and are strictly commuter cars (going from the descriptions).

Depends on the driver and how the car was used... I have a BMW from '87 with 'only' ~170,000 on it. The really high mileage cars probably all went the way of dodo as they become too expensive to repair over the years.

My 02 (bought in Sept. 01) has 45k. Also, 83 280zx with 170k. I have work trucks that get all the day to day mileage and motorcycles on the weekend.
