I wish to hell they'd get rid of the GD quote button altogether. With all the lazy ass morons around here, you end up with shlt like "TheSiege" posted on 07/21/2004 11:05 AM in this topic. Fvckin' dildo! :|

Sometimes it seems so out of context to respond to the OP when the thread has moved away from it's original topic that by quoting the OP you give some sort of relevance to your post.

Nobody seems to have mentioned that quoting a post, be it OP or a reply, preserves the post in case of an edit. I know have read some threads in which the OP or a reply was edited. But luckily I could still read the entire thread because someone had the decency to quote the post they were replying to!

But isn't it assumed that if you don't quote anything then you are responding to the original post?

This really bugs me when its one of those "Guess what happened to me" threads that are 3 pages long, and people will quote it, making their response HUGE when everybody has read that part already and doesn't need to be reminded what the thread is about?

The Quote function gets misused a bit, but I find it useful because what if you want to respond to someone further down in the thread? It helps so that the people reading the thread know who you're actually addressing.

Otherwise, threads would just read like a bunch of people talking at once in a crowded room.

Yes, I quoted the original post. Blow me. :p

sometimes the thread in OT gets way OT and this helps bring it back in line.

Whenever I reply, I think if it will be useful to quote. Quite often it is. But I don't quote the whole thing. I will only quote the sentence(s) I'm replying to. Thus there are not any HUGE responces on my part.

The quote feature is useful, but it should be altered so that it CANNOT quote within a quote. Those who do it are typically morons. You know who you are.

The irony of a user named "Dullard" calling someone a moron is just killing me here..... :p

I do it so people know who I'm responding to. For all they know, I could be talking to the guy that posts before me. By quoting you, there is no question who I am talking to.

Folks, quoting is a GOOD THING.

Now see? This is confusing. Who knows who he agrees with?

It could be the OP, or it could be me. Who knows?

Now, had he quoted who he agreed with, there would be no confusion whatsoever.

"Who knows who he agrees with?"

Anyone with half a brain, since it was only posted two minutes after yours. No need to start one of the nested quote hells, that you lazy asses are known for! :|
