How come people always quote the original post?

I always figure you quote somebody else in a thread if you want to make a point on top of that one, or if you want everybody to know that's what you're responding to...
But isn't it assumed that if you don't quote anything then you are responding to the original post?

This really bugs me when its one of those "Guess what happened to me" threads that are 3 pages long, and people will quote it, making their response HUGE when everybody has read that part already and doesn't need to be reminded what the thread is about?

sometimes when a thread gets to be more than 1 page long, people will go straight to the last page without reading the original post (who read the entire thread anyway ;)) so it's good to quote.

Maybe if the original question wasn't so mind-numbing it wouldn't get retarded responses.

I've seen people (RobCur, lobshot most recently) start a thread with a trolling or flamebait post, then edit it to something less inflamatory after people take the bait.

RobCur had one a couple weeks ago where he started a thread saying something like "Banning gay marriage -- I think it's a good idea" to start a flamewar, then edited it to something less homophobic after a few people replied.

lobshot started threads yesterday in both Video and General Hardware accusing "Sneaky company" nVidia of having a secret recall of all 6800 Ultra chips (with anti-nV slams in the post), then edited the GH thread to admit he/she based it only on what one salesman told them.

In these kinds of cases, quoting the OP before they change their flamebait is a way to keep them from hiding it later and to explain why you reacted strongly after the bait vanishes from the original post.

Of course the best course is probably just to ignore threads like that entirely.

Well, it's rude not to address the person you're replying to, even on ATOT. (to some anyway, and some are just rude naturally)

Sometimes I wish they would just get rid of the quote function as its nearly useless at this point. I see it abused far more than it is any benefit at this point.

Actually, we once started quoting each other in this one thread... up to more than 50 people just quoting the same thread, and hoping that the Mods would lock it up... they never did, and the thread just die. It was a legend. I can't find the thread now, the thread got so big, it fux0red up the CSS of the board.

Oh? So, if we didn't have a quote function, and I wrote this reply, how would you know who I was talking to?
