Sounds like their installer was borked and didn't create the proper configuration files.
If you know what your doing you can simply fill them in manually, but it's hard to say how badly it did it's job.
Also check out /etc/inittab
Getty is the program that creates your virtual console, and you need at least one as the root console (or something like that). Something that system messages get written out to.
check out the configs from a working distro to see how they are usually configured. But the best bet is to go the user mailing list or forums or whatever and tell them that you have blank configurations after a install and tell them your error and how you installed and setup the system.
