How come no one chats online anymore?

I am talking about chat rooms and what not. When I got onto the internet around 1996, chat rooms were the rave. Mostly everyone I knew, who was online at that time, would have a favourite chat room. Some went to AOL, some went to IRC, some went to Yahoo. But seems like no one does that anymore. I wasn't all that a big fan of it, but it was all right. Have the popularity of chat rooms actually gone down in the recent years?
