How come no one cares about Gateway?

No one seems to really care what Gateway does. They released their own line of cameras, no one cared. They did the same with MP3 players, again no one cared. They sell their own line of home theater systems, and plasma TVs, but not even a single mention of them. Ofcourse I am going by what is discussed on this forum, and some other forums I visit. Dell releases an MP3 player, and Oh My God, there is hoopla about it everywhere. What's the deal?

I think everyone knows that Gateway has always been dying a slow, painful death in DELL's shadow.

Gateway always seems a step or two behind Dell, with second-rate PC offerings (priced higher, much less customization), less-powerful laptops (Dell ships the latest grphics chips much sooner), and less interesting non-PC tech (hasn't their PDA been delayed a couple of times now?).

The last time Gateway did anything interesting was when they first started selling a low-priced plasma TV, and that did trigger a thread or two here. Since then they've been shuffling behind Dell like an arthritic sloth.

Gateway's stuff is not the highest quality, although it is priced as such. Besides, they have been dieing for years. I wish they would just go away.

no one cared
I think you indicated their issue - "no one cared." I used to visit the Gateway store every few months. Now, I haven't been there in over a year. Being a "tweaker" it's kind of hard to care about Gateway systems as a whole. As far as MP3 players go, the MP3/CD player that I received from Sony a couple of years back is still chugging along - no need to replace it.

I remember talking to a tech at Gateway about a hard drive issue and was told that it was out of warranty(less than four months old) and the tech said that his records show that it was not the case. I asked him again to check your records and he later gave me the run around. I told the tech to go look for another job because the way I(the consumer) was being treated that Gateway is going to die a slow death...

Gateway's camera was a pretty exact clone of some cheap camera brand, Apex or something from what I recall. Also, their mp3 player is totally flash based, which came out about 4 years too late to be considered 'cool.'

Dell's got the right idea, but with all the price 'mistakes' we've been seeing lately, I predict a consumer backlash. Price is almost everything, but satisfaction counts for SOMETHING.

For example, look at this mp3 player. Gateway JUST introduced a line of hard drive mp3 players (finally) that looks exactly like the Creative Nomad Zen. And it's about $50 more expensive, if I'm correct. Add to that the fact that I never ever heard that Gateway was releasing a new line of players, and Gateway is going down the tubes.

Seriously, word of mouth counts, and Dell's products are more reliable than Gateway's from what I've heard.

I used to swear by Gateway... used them for everything. Then their products starting becoming inferior to Dell's... their service started slipping (even though Dell's is much worse now), and all of their in store personnel around here wanted to make me sick because of how falsely enthusiastic they were. Their price remaining high was the final clincher. I recommend people avoid them.

Gateway lost it's identity and never regained it. Combine that with poor marketing, subpar quality components at non-competitive prices and you have a disaster in the making.
