How come most company laptops are IBM Thinkpad?

They're not particularly fast... horribly flawed ergonomically.. design is terrible... it's not particularly light or compact... also wtf.. 1024 x 768 in this day and age...

Why? My desktop got fried and I'm using the company Thinkpad. It's terrible. Aren't these really expensive too? Why?

My former company used HP for servers, desktops, and laptops. I had an nc6000. Very nice laptop.

IBM laptops are the best windows based Laptops. they're built like tanx!!!

when I compare IBM's to Dell/toshiba/compaq...etc IBM just feels better designed and have a way higher built quality.

edit:

perhaps good marketing to corporations?

I'm serious. Is it because of good marketing to corps and they get mass discount?

The amount of abuse I've seen them take is second to none in their price range. Keyboards, buttons, ports, displays, ect. They are build to last.

We use thinkpads here, I'm not a big fan. Maybe some users like them, but it's not all roses and candy on the support side. I actually preferred the HP's we had the the last place I worked.

personally i love the styling of them. i have one for my personal laptop and the thing is built like a tank. it does not feel flimsy like alot of other laptops i have used and it also has a nub on the keyboard which i like better then trackpads.

Please tell me why? I just don't get it.

I like the keyboard, none of the keys are in weird locations (Fn and ctrl are swapped on HP's), built really well (have drip trays so spilling a drink on the keyboard won't fry it), high resolution screens available without using a wide screen, they have great driver support (no issues with 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows along with many version of Linux), built in light for use at night, standard bays for devices among models, guides online as to how to take them apart to either replace parts or upgrade them, dual pointing options...

We used to call them Stinkpads back in the late 90s. They never had flashy design, but have been pretty solid from what I've heard in recent years. I always see people with them at conferences.

I've been working for a Dell shop for the last 6 years... I wouldn't trade my D620 for anything....except maybe a D630.

I have a nc6220 for use at work and I don't really like it. It doesn't dock well with the docking station all the time and the video driver support is horrible. Setting up a second monitor shouldn't be so much work. Undock it and it forgets how you had the monitor configured. The fan seems to always run at mach 5 too. No middle mouse button drives me crazy too.

1024 x 768? What the hell are you buying, an ultraportable x31 or some garbage?

Most TX series are widescreen displays, the 14" run 1400x1050 if I recall correctly. Not only do the Thinkpads last forever, but the coverage on the warranty is pretty hard to beat from a business standpoint.

Depends on the series.

T series is a tank, but lightweight, and that's exactly what corp America needs. People abuse their own equipment pretty bad, imagine what it's like for a "free" laptop.

Yeah, the low resolution screen was the company being cheap, my HP is the same way. I feel like I'm using a Fisher Price computer. I don't understand most consumer laptops being 1220x800.

They're amazingly sturdy. I used a T41 that was dropped on it's corner and chipped off exposing metal frame. It still works fine, nothing else broken. I used a X60s that I used to stack books on top of and carried in a regular backpack with no padding. I have an old X22 which is from years ago and still in great working condition.

The X60 has great ergonomics. The keyboard is tilted down so it's easy to type on for hours. The trackpoint is simple to use after you get used to it for a day. From my experience and readings on various forums, people love the keyboard on the Thinkpads.

Using a Thinkpad for a short period of time isn't going to change your mind about it. It also depends on which one you're using. I only have experience with the T and X series. I do agree with you about the 1024x768res on the 12" Thinkpads though. The tablet 12" Thinkpad does offer a much higher resolution.

I think Thinkpads are the most durable out there. I had a Dell for my last job...POS broke down and fell apart in a year.

OP. What's wrong with the ergonomics? How much does it weigh? What size is it? What wrong with the design? You haven't really provided any details to back up anything you've said.

My last job was nothing but Dell until my partner and I got there and started buying HP. We didn't completely switch, we'd just get quotes from both every time we needed machines and buy whichever was cheaper, but the ratio ended up being about 50/50. My college used nothing but Thinkpads, though - actually gave one to every student. Now that I think about it, they switched to Dell the year after I graduated.

From what I've used the last 7 years, I'd rank the feel of them as Dell > HP > Thinkpad, though that's not a negative on the 'pads just more positives on the other two.
