how come marketing people are rarely aware of the competition?

working at dell i had the opportunity to talk to the marketing people (i'm not refering to the guys that come up with ads) of various companies. very rarely did they have anything but a cursory knowledge of their product, or did they know how their product stacked up to the competition, or any of the flaws of their own product. the sony monitor guy knew his sh!t, but didn't know that 1280x1024 wasn't a 4:3 resolution. the canon guy did as well, but hes actually not a canon guy, he just runs a canon enthusiast website and is located locally.

It's only natrual for customers to know more about products then marking people because we use them all the time.

Marketing is all about image. Most of those guys don't know what they are talking about.

yeah i spoke to a couple of them for great long whiles detailing 1) why music match wasn't good for making mp3s with (for the music match girl) 2) why palm processors don't need to run 400MHz (for the axim guys) 3) what a desknote is (for one of the guys showing dell's new desktop parts notebook)
