How come I've never seen an Asian play a Vulcan?

It seems like it would be a good fit. I think Latinos/Lantinas would make good Vulcans too. And it would open up more acting opportunities for asians and latinos. I think the Vulcan who works with B'ellana is a Latino but I'm not sure.

Anyways, the reason I thought of this was because I noticed that most Klingons seem to be played by blacks -- this opens up a lot of acting opportunities for blacks in the Star Trek universe and I thought it would be nice to open up the same opportunities for asians and latinos.

To answer the original question, how do you know they havent? They wear make-up?

Who cares, its not enough that they have an actor/actress to play the role now they must have affirmative action in tv and the movies too? Did anyone learn from Cuba Gooding's role in Pearl Harbor, would givine an asian person a token role in a show make ya feel better?
What difference does it make what race anyone is?

Go watch the original series (STAR TREK) episode named AMOK TIME. I believe that you will find that both Spock's wife (T'Pring) and her wanna'be boyfriend (Stahn) both have very slanted eyes. I don't know if that qualifies as "Asian", but the look is a lot closer.

What I really want to know is why is it that Vulcan's and Human's are the only multi-racial species? Why aren't there "white" or "oriental" Klingons? Why don't green races have super-light to almost black green? Why only these two races?

Hmmm, I'll have to re-watch those old episodes.

But this brings up my original point -- I've always thought that many Vulcans kind of have a lot of asian physical features and instead of using a lot of makeup to make a white person have asian features, why not use an asian? I'm just curious as to what an asian Vulcan would look like.

skywhr: ok, you lost me there... The role played by Cuba Gooding was actually based on a black cook in real life. Thus it would be stupid to have it played by a white or asian.

Besides, we all know there is no such thing as an "asian" Vulcan! Asians are only found on Earth. :p

Give me some proof?

Cuba Gooding, Jr. has an embarrassingly brief role as a cook who becomes a
hero because if the filmmakers didn't show a black guy doing something,
liberals would get all upset about lack of black representation. First of all, I
don't recall seeing a single Hawaiian in the entire film. Secondly, what does
Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character have to do with the story? It's actually an insult
that he's in the film, because the scenes are so clearly a patronizing effort to
appease the black community. Do they really need or want appeasement by
every mediocre flick that comes stumbling down the pike?

LOL. :)

Yeah, and when you think about it, any species that mates only once every 7 years would be extinct....

skywhr,

I think the reason the cook was in the movie was because he was an historically well-known part of the attack on Pearl Harbor. So significant in fact that he has been mentioned in many Pearl Harbor documentaries, such as those you may have seen on the History channel. His efforts brought tremendous pride to the American people, and he was honored with one of the highest medals for his valor. And the basis of his valor was that although he was an enlisted cook for years, he took to arms and helped defend against the attack.

To me, this is a very moving piece of History, and I'm glad they put it in the movie.

I read once that in the original series, Spock was supposed to be GREEN! But the producers decided that it was a bad idea since it made him look black on non-color TV's. I don't know whether they were scared of portraying black people as emotionless aliens or portraying them as super-smart science officers.

A little of topic, but has anyone ever noticed how much bitch-slapping there was on the original series? I saw the one with Khan on Sci-Fi Channel on Monday, and one of his minions bitch-slapped the hell out of Uhura. My wife must have noticed her revealing outfit because she accidentally called her "U-Whore-A." :D
