i have about 1 gig worth of .dat files now. But the only thing i do is download software. Why are the .DAT files so big if i'm saving the files to a separate directory?

and how do i get rid of them???

I wish I had big DAT files... :D

sorry couldn't resist! It's prolly because you have insane numbers of headers?

every time u download something, tho you saved it to some directory, its also stored as DAT files in the directory...after the download, just delete the headers then compact the database...

i have the purge button on my toolbar. i constantly purge by clicking the purge button.

if you have the crosspost filter turned on you will have to clear that out from time to time, too. it can get huge.

crosspost = when messages are posted to more than one group. a lot of spam is crossposted to different groups. you can half-ass filter them out in agent.

look under group/default properties/crossposts

You can have message body downloads directed to a folder so they aren't saved in DAT files and it's a workaround the 2 GB DAT file limit in Agent.

don't forget that you have to COMPACT the dat files after purging...

Its under FILE.... Compact Database files....

I compact 1-2Gb a day....

Nope, you just lose the header and body information and will have to redownload all the headers for that group.

Every pr0n message you download is stored there. Just delete all files that start with a number.

PS. dont ask me how I know that ;)

Look at the default message properties for the option to delete body from message after saving as an attachment. This option will make agent delete the body of the message from the DAT file after it has been saved to your hard drive.

If you let your DAT files get over 2 GB then you will start getting all kinds of weird error messages, and even the compact process fails. That is how I found out about the option above.
