How come I can't see disk defragmenter in system tools?

I'm trying to clean up my friends laptop and when I wanted to defrag his hard drive, all the programs that are suppose to be in the system tools are gone except for one but that was irrelavent.

Is there an option to show all the tools again especially disk defrag.

Thanks a bunch

Why don't you try reinstalling your OS. I have had several items not show on the desk top but are on the hard drive.

First of all, what Windows version? If it's XP or 2000, run diskmgmt.msc or open My Computer. Right-click on the partition, Properties, and Tools.

Also if its 2000/XP and defrag is not found after the above, pop in the CD and run sfc /scannow

Its XP/Pro, his laptop came from a friend and does not have the XP cd. I told him its best to reinstall the OS but he doesn't have the CD. Thats why im trying to best to clean it without buying a new XP disk. I guess I can try your second method sm8000. That may work. When I see him again on friday i will let him know. Thanks for the input fellas.

try looking in the system32 files.. defreagment is probably there, or you can also i think go to run and type C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Defragmenter maybe his start menu is just screwed and you just can't see it, yet still run it

why not hit up a torrent site for a OEM cd...use his license

what type of a laptop is it (dell, HP, gateway, ect...) im sure someone can hook you up with the OEM

Doesn't XP have an "add/ remove windows components" section ? If it does then just add that component and point to the I386 folder or insert any XP disk and point there.

I only see XP when I fix the relatives machines, so sorry if I'm off base here.
