Because men are insecure.

Though I call them my guy friends, which is essentially the same without the possibility of misinterpretation.

Beat me.

That's why women are women. Girlfriends, freshen up together/go to the bathroom together, shoes shopping, cloths shopping, gossiping, etc. = things that women do that normal guys would not understand.

Guys don't call their male friends "boyfriends" :hmm:

It means very little to call my friends my "girlfriends"

Women don't have to worry about being called gay nor would many take it as an insult. Straight men are not as comfortable

yeah, girls can call each other girlfriends and noone thinks anything of it, but as soon as I say "me and my boyfriend are going to the mall to shop for fanny packs", everyone assumes I'm a gay

I call my girl friends gurlfren (stress the 'fren').

Some of them also think I'm gay...
