It came out in 1999 and im just playing it for the first time now... Its fantastic! The campaign is fun, its got humor and there gameplay is definitely different from other strategy games. Its i was playing it at 3am yesterday and the adviser said "For your nocturnal devotion heres a free game tip: GO TO BED" Lol, did it read the time off windows or something? I thought that was a nice touch. Anyways im having a blast with it, but wikipedia says it didn't sell well and dungeon keeper 3 was canceled, why didn't it sell well?

It did well.
I like the game alot.
Its just that the company bullfrog got sold out to ea :(
and in typical ea fashion they killed it.

DK2 was good, although the original was better. I always had sound issues and random crashes with DK2 :(

A big FU to EA for killing so many classic franchises

If wikipidia says so you should probably ignore it.
That is NOT the webs encylopedia. That is a BS site where every idiot who wants to post "facts" may do so. Very little info there gets investigated or corrected by the site admins.

DK2 sold fairly well. It may not seem that way because EA bought Bullfrog shortly after the game came out and stopped making & selling copies. I think they had time to get one quick patch out and that was it.

Also, it may not have seemed very popular because around that time more traditional (i.e. cookie cutter) RTS's were very popular along with lots of mindless action games.
I miss DK2 and the era it represents. It was right around that time games started to get much more expensive and offer much less play value.
EA had a lot to do with that.

Games with quality game play at the expense of visuals typically don't sell well. Big flashy graphics sell titles.

Planescape Torment only sold around 700k copies, more than enough to break even certainly, but a far cry from the multi-million copy console sales. Look at Halo 3, for example. Like its predecessors, it will be completely devoid of gameplay and reuse tricks from other FPS games, and yet, its pre-orders alone are over 1 million. I don't think they even have a hard launch date yet. Given the PS3 lack of sales, I don't think MS is in too big of a hurry to get the game out the door quickly either. In theory, this would alone them to refine the game and fix issues and bugs. In reality, work on the game will stop at some point and MS will hold Halo 3 'in reserve' until more PS3 titles appear that cause the PS3 sales to pick up.

Has anyone played Overlord? Is it similar to DK, I was thinking of trying it out.

Do you need to play the first one to fully enjoy the second one?

Funny you mention that. I have a copy of Overlord sitting at home gathering dust. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Overlord is decent, but it's no masterpiece. If they made your main characters movement/combat and little more smooth I think it would have been close though.

The question shouldn't be why didn't it sell good; it should be why was DK3 canned. The answer if Wiki is to be believed is so it wouldn't compete with Black & White since in both games you could choose to be the bad guy.

Well, Bullfrog got purchased by EA and they have a habit of squashing good franchises and promising titles.
That it competed with B&W is probably irrelevant. EA is evil.

SCREW THE BASTARDS!

I remember that I didn't buy Dungeon Keeper 2 because it came out too soon after the original Dungeon Keeper for me to want to play it. I loved the first one but they only waited, wait, a year or two before launching a sequel?

People keep saying that but it doesnt make any sense to me.

I joined the Navy in early '97 and couldnt play any video games for years, but I distinctly recall playing DK1 for a long time.
I also dont recall DK2 coming out until I already had my 3D accelerated laptop for some time, which I bought in 2000.
By my estimation, they had almost 4 years between the games.
I know people here keep saying 1997 and 1999, but that just doesnt seem right to me.

So its mainly down to bullfrog choosing the path of evil (like many of us in B&W) and selling out to EA. Then EA ruining them like they did with maxis (to some extent) and westwood.

Well, thats like hating Pizza Hut for "selling out" to Pepsi.
They are both corporations. Corporations have stocks.
Anybody can buy stock.
If Pepsi is worth 20 billion and has 1 billion in cash available, how long do you think the $500,000,000 Pizza Hut can hold out?

Thats why I hate EA.
They didnt get to be a successful company by making and selling good games, they are a big company because they use horrid, evil tactics and suck up and spit out little companies and crush the competition (989 sports for example).
