How come Credit Cards don't require a PIN # like an ATM card?

It'd make sense would it not? I mean, especially if you're giving your CC over the phone, or giving it to someone at a restaurant the person handling it could so easily take the info and use it themselves.

I'm much to paranoid to own a credit card for that reason..cash all the way!

EDIT: Whoop, thought I had posted this in the OT forum but I ended up posting here, I didn't see it in OT so I posted it again..

For cash advances you DO have to use a PIN number. For all other transactions, credit cards offer protection for unauthorized charges, that's why they have those things called credit card disputes.

Credit Cards do have PIN numbers, although in the US and UK, they are usually only required for cash advances.

If you go to France, every point-of-sale credit card terminal requires you to enter your PIN for every transaction.

Pretty much all european coutries (England, Germany, Italy, France, Austria) require pin numbers when you use your cc

Neither ATM cards nor credit cards have PIN numbers, and almost nobody has used an ATM card in an ATM machine.

Credit cards are a standard form of payment, and the credit agencies protect you.

If your card is stolen you are only liable for $50, payments you make in person you have to sign for, and over the internet you have to enter your Bill to Address the same as it is listed with your credit card company or they reject it.

Having a PIN number for online/phone transactions would be useless, the point of a PIN number on Convience cards is that it's a secret only you know for the Electronic Teller Machines. If you had to give out your pin number over the phone/internet how does that protect you?

Believe me if someone went to enough trouble to find out your credit number, expiry date and bill to address, if you had a pin number that you gave out to, it woudln't be hard to get that.

Credit cards are quite safe in that regard. Cash is a pain in the ass.

Hell, an order I made they double checked with me because I didn't put my middle initial on the order, but it is on my card. Everyone uses Credit cards, if it was that easy to perform credit card fraud there woudln't be CC companies anymore.

Not to mention anyone caught uses other peoples credit card numbers is in deep deep sh*t.

What cave do you live in again? The bank ATMs here get used all the time! I've used mine hundreds of times at ATM machines, and usually have to wait in a line. I think saying that nobody has used an ATM card in an ATM machine is definitely incorrect.

I know we're liable for only $50 for US credit card, $300 for ATM card,
what about other countries?
I know in Hong Kong, you're liable for everything before you report the card lost/stolen.
