How come computer cases don't use standard USB/Firewire connectors?

I had to spend an annoying amount of time trying to connect each tiny individual wire on the Antec's usb and firewire connector to my motherboard.

How didn't motherboard and case manufacturers get together and come up with a standard connector? Perhaps even using the perfectly good external connector standard that already exists for usb and firewire so we could just use any available usb or firewire cable?.

Way back there wasn't really a standard. The closest thing to a standard is Intel's pinout, but not every motherboard manufacturer uses that.

Most of our cases now come with that connector standard (Intel), however there are plenty floating around that have the older pin by pin USB connector.

The individual pin front panel connectors are done that way because the mobo headers aren't all the same (see Gigabyte Firewire for example). I make it easier to use the single pin connections by lining them up the way my mobo header is and taping or gluing them together (don't ask me why others can't seem to think of this...). Case and front ports panel mfrs should all be using the 10-pin shell by now, but then they would have to teach you how to shift the contacts around for those mobos that are different. So I guess single pin is just easier - for them...
