How come certain programs cant access the internet without a firewall running?

I run Zone Alarm ocassionally but sometimes I dont run it. Well, certain programs, like AIM, wont connect unless ZoneAlarm is running. Why is this? I would think a firewall would reduce the chances of a program gaining access to the internet. Programs like Trillian run fine with or without ZA.

OK quick question.

If you have Trillain why do you have AIM?

My only guess would be that you had the firewall up whne you installed or perhaps you aren't really turning it off.

This should get the award of the Question of the week.

I constantly hear about Programs that would Not go to the Internet with Firewall On.

But this one is new to me.

Could be that ZA messed up your Windows Services.

Trillian does not allow to directly connect through AIM, therefore I use AIM once in a while.

But I dunno, maybe I did have ZA running when I installed aim, but I dont recall. Would that make it so AIM automatically configured itself to access the internet using ZA's port settings or something?
