This was a lunchtime argument between me and a Vette lover. Regardless of how it turned out on a track I'd pick a porsche and he'd pick the vette...I'm just curious the reality of the matter.

How CLOSE though, I accept a Z06 will probably have a better track time due to it being a purpose built tracker but I just wonder how close it would be...a 911 is obviously worlds more civilized.

If civilized means back seat, yes the 911 has a small back seat.

Exact answer from TopGear (same driver):
Vette: 1:22.4
911: 1:28.9
Unfortunately the track was wet the day the 911 showed up. But there is a major point to be made in the Vette's favor: Porsche 911 GT3 RS - 1:22.3
If the Vette is only .1 behind the GT3 RS, which is quicker than the GT3, which is quicker (normally) than the Turbo, which is quicker than a S....well, you do the math![]()

Yeah the only reason I didnt go straight to the Stig's numbers is because there are HUGE differences between the conditions for each test....That can make a world of difference so honestly I think those numbers are close to useless. WHY would they even bother posting numbers for days they drove in inclement weather? Just doesnt make sense?

Z06 vs GT3 at Buttonwillow:

That's a pretty tight track. The Z06 only hits 123.3 at the end of the straight. Even then, the GT3, with its far superior tires, couldn't beat it.
The 997 S would be dead in the water in anything bigger than an abridged auto-x course.
It wouldn't be close.Originally posted by: RollWave

Define average track? Does that also include a drag strip?
Actually, who even cares.
This is what is happening across the country.

Going in, it was an uphill battle for the automatic. Our test car weighed 3584 pounds, a 70-pound penalty compared with the manual. Furthermore, the automatic launches without much wheelspin, unlike the manual, and it therefore doesn't get off the line as swiftly. We hit 30 mph in 1.3 seconds, which is 0.2-second off the manual's pace. But that early deficit is overcome by the Tiptronic's smooth and quick wide-open-throttle upshifts which keep the turbos spooled up, unlike what happens when you lift to shift in the manual. By 60 mph, that lost time is made up and the Tiptronic matches the manual car's 3.4-second blast. From there, it continues to gain ground and edges out the manual in the quarter-mile by a scant 0.1 second?11.6 seconds at 122 mph versus 11.7 at 121?and it stays ahead the rest of the way, hitting 160 mph in 22.1 seconds versus 23.8. In case you're wondering, that quarter-mile time is better than the quickest 505-hp Corvette Z06 we've tested.
