How close would a 911 Carrera S vs Z06 matchup be on an average track?

Just curious since these cars are close to the same price bracket...how close would a "race" be between these two cars on a track? The Z06 has noticeably more grunt but would it handle as well as a rear engined porche?

This was a lunchtime argument between me and a Vette lover. Regardless of how it turned out on a track I'd pick a porsche and he'd pick the vette...I'm just curious the reality of the matter.

I think they did a comparison in a magazine i have, i'd dig it out but its too late.. and it might have been the GT3 RS come to think of it.

Define average track? Does that also include a drag strip?

Actually, who even cares.

This is what is happening across the country.

Neither of us really cares. Just curious to know how close the cars would be faced with twisties. I know a Z06 can outdrag it by a lot.

Z06 will beat 911 Turbo around most tracks. 911 Carrera S wouldn't stand a chance.

How CLOSE though, I accept a Z06 will probably have a better track time due to it being a purpose built tracker but I just wonder how close it would be...a 911 is obviously worlds more civilized.

If civilized means back seat, yes the 911 has a small back seat.

If civilized means back seats built for 4 year olds, snazzier interior design, and much smaller storage, then yes, civilized.

I mean less butt-rapage due to road imperfections ;).

Exact answer from TopGear (same driver):

Vette: 1:22.4

911: 1:28.9

Unfortunately the track was wet the day the 911 showed up. But there is a major point to be made in the Vette's favor: Porsche 911 GT3 RS - 1:22.3

If the Vette is only .1 behind the GT3 RS, which is quicker than the GT3, which is quicker (normally) than the Turbo, which is quicker than a S....well, you do the math :)

Yeah the only reason I didnt go straight to the Stig's numbers is because there are HUGE differences between the conditions for each test....That can make a world of difference so honestly I think those numbers are close to useless. WHY would they even bother posting numbers for days they drove in inclement weather? Just doesnt make sense?

Z06 vs GT3 at Buttonwillow:

http://www.nobleforums.com/showthread.php?t=1869

That's a pretty tight track. The Z06 only hits 123.3 at the end of the straight. Even then, the GT3, with its far superior tires, couldn't beat it.

The 997 S would be dead in the water in anything bigger than an abridged auto-x course.

Without even looking at the rest of the thread, a Z06 would murder a Carrera S. And I'm a Porsche lover.

I love Porsches, love their quirks, love the way they drive, but I cannot deny that the Corvette Z06 is probably the single best performance bargain on the market today. It can pound on cars twice its price and it's a magnificent performance machine.

A C5 Z06 would probably put a hurtin' on the Carrera S. The C6 Z06 definitely will.

Z06 is faster

I'd rather own the Porsche if forced to choose (such torture!!)

A tweaked (read : decent Turbo/Super) Elise or Noble would eat either of them for lunch on a track with more than a couple of curves ;)

That video is complete crap: link

Going in, it was an uphill battle for the automatic. Our test car weighed 3584 pounds, a 70-pound penalty compared with the manual. Furthermore, the automatic launches without much wheelspin, unlike the manual, and it therefore doesn't get off the line as swiftly. We hit 30 mph in 1.3 seconds, which is 0.2-second off the manual's pace. But that early deficit is overcome by the Tiptronic's smooth and quick wide-open-throttle upshifts which keep the turbos spooled up, unlike what happens when you lift to shift in the manual. By 60 mph, that lost time is made up and the Tiptronic matches the manual car's 3.4-second blast. From there, it continues to gain ground and edges out the manual in the quarter-mile by a scant 0.1 second?11.6 seconds at 122 mph versus 11.7 at 121?and it stays ahead the rest of the way, hitting 160 mph in 22.1 seconds versus 23.8. In case you're wondering, that quarter-mile time is better than the quickest 505-hp Corvette Z06 we've tested.

Chevrolet announces Z06 0-60 mph time, for reference.

I still like the Porsche better, but there's no denying the raw speed of the Z06 in any situation.

The Z06 is a great bang for the buck in price and kicks some serious arse but cmon, the Porsche is well a Porsche. It's not like the Z06 beats the Porsche by a HUGE margin. The 911 is MUCH more rare. If I was going for speed on the cheap I would get the Z06, but if I had enough money to pick either one, hands down the Porsche.
