How close is the HBO series Oz to real life in prison?

So I decided to start watching the series Oz based on the reviews I read from netflix. So far its a really good drama, but I'm wondering how close it resembles real prisons. Hopefully I'll never have to find out personally.

Um, I watched it a few times and got depressed. I think it's mild compared to reality. I'm in LA where we have many prisons....many!!!

Oz was a great show, but really, who''s to say how realistic it is? Some of the character/group portrayals and tendencies may be grounded in reality but many of the storylines are concocted to keep the show moving forward.

And what makes you think other people have "used" a rape me in the ass prison? If you wanna know, go in yourself.

I can not speak for authenticity, but Oz was a fantastic series. I loved when Beacher sharpened his nails to points, killed the guard that f'd him... then nonchalantly cliped his nails.

SideNote: Oz Narrator "Augustus Hill" is now in Lost.

Not true to life at all IMO. In Oz the inmates ran the prison and did whatever they wanted. Someone got shanked in every episode. I find it hard to believe that prisons could be that much out of control.

Not to mention all the coincidences that happened in every episode.

I'm pretty sure that when the guys at OZ decided to start putting on plays by Shakespeare that it was mimicking real life prisons.

you're thinking of Queer as Folk, I'm pretty sure that's the gay porn drama (now that I would know from first hand experience)

Damn near every cast member from Oz is a regular or has been a guest on Law and Order: SVU.

Not nearly enough shanking and pounding in the ass. IRL prisons, you are shanked and pounded in the ass on an almost daily basis.

I haven't even seen that show.

Yeah, I've noticed some weird connection with Oz, The Wire and L&O.
