How close do IDE drives need to be for RAID, and are there RAID boards for Intel chips?

always hear people talkin' bout RAID on the AMD boards, but havent really seen any talk about it with Intel stuff, are there any P3 or P4 boards with built on RAID? just curious. if not, then why do amd boards seem to feature them?

and how close do drives need to be for RAID, i know it's best for them to be the exact same, but what if they are close, let's say both are maxtor 30 gig 7200 rpm drives. is that good enough? or do they both need to have the same seek time, both ata 100 (never will get close anyway), both the same platter size, etc.

thankee.

Lots of intel boards have RAID controllers on them as well, its not AMD specific. In fact, its actually up to the motherboard manufacturer to determine if they are gonna put RAID on board or not. And its much better that the drives be exactly the same, however if they are different the effect will be that the RAID performance comes from the slowest drive.

<< its not AMD specific. >>

i know that :p, i just never see anyone say much about them, always see posts on the dragon + or the a7v133, etc. guess it's just the folks visitin here mostly run amd boards. are there not as many intel based boards that support raid, or does the combination of low problems/few visitors with them lead to a smaller number of posts on them

ok i guess what im saying is i can think of a ton of amd boards that have built in raid, but dont know any for intel :(

Just off the top of my head, the Abit VP6 is a dual FC-PGA Intel board w/ RAID 0/1 support. They also have a few P4 boards w/ RAID support.
