Would fit in well with my intention to get a Asrock VSTA mobo & a C2D 6400 early next year, and i can still get a reasonable amount for my 6600GT AGP right now...

Anyway, i can get a XFX 7600GS for ~200 AUD, and a 7600GT is 330 AUD :p

Would probably drop my VF700-Cu on it...

EDIT: or am i better looking for a 6800GT/GS 2nd hand?

If you are lucky, you can get the core to maybe 500 Mhz, not too far from the GT's 560 Mhz. But you will be severely limited by the DDR2 memory on the GS which doesn't clock above 900 Mhz in best cases vs 1400 Mhz Stock DDR3 on the GT.

The stock GS has about 65% of the performance of the GT. With luck, you can get to near 80%, but of course, your results may vary.

damn - my bad - didnt see that agp part!

who not look at a x800 pro /xt /gt ?
they're quite cheap new and second hand
very similar speeds although you're missing out on HDR and sm3
I'm actually in a very similar situation, but have come to the conclusion that $200+au cards are not worth it anymore
might even be cheaper to sell whatever mobo you got, get a cheap pci-e one, the loss on that will still be cheaper than the price difference on an agp/pci-e card

I'll be getting the asrock VSTA mobo & a Conroe 6400 in the new year, and then the next AGP card i get will be carried over into that build, to last me happily until DX10 cards are established.

By selling my 6600GT i can reasonably happily justify spending say another ~100-150 in cash on top to upgrade, so say my upper limit is ~250 or so, 6800GS looks like my best bet atm, from the reading i've done apparently it overclocks well, and teh AGP version can often be unlocked to a full GT core, but with the faster ram...

I'm confused by it all tho

another thing to consider is if you want to pull the trigger on getting the conroe now
if cash is a problem there is always the option of getting a 8xx series dual core p4 netburst (insert toaster joke here;)
then the same money can be spent on a 7600gt instead..

are you thinking of getting the first generation of dx10 cards? they are going to be damn expensive! - its going to be mid to late 07 before you see some value in dx10 cards I think.

the price of the 6800gs however isnt that bad on staticice ... $180 only, if you manage to sell your 6600gt for $150, thats a real cheap $30 upgrade

edit: however, depending on the game, there may be little difference in 6600gt and 6800gs

yeah cash is a problem now (my final semester at law school), so i think it will have to be card only until i start work in jan.

I'd o'c the crap out of the 6800GS, apparently many of the AGP ones can be unlocked to the GT/Ultra pipe number, but with the faster ram, and that should be a decent boost over my 6600GT, enough to throw some AA at most things (i'm very happy playing at 1024 on my 21" CRT for stuff like FEAR right nowm but 2xAA would be nice). I wouldn't buy first gen DX10 like you say, it will be pricey...
