How clean do you need to be when building?

This may seem odd, but I was wondering how clean you need to be when building a PC? What if sand, dirt, or crumbs from your hands or clothing fall into your PC while you are working on it? Would that seriously mess up the PC?

What do you guys do prior to building a PC? Is it enough to just wash your hands and wear an ESD strap? Or should you change into new clothes just in case?

Just wear what you would like and often touch the chassis before handling components. Some like to even stand on a rubber mat 😛

But seriously just go build the daRn thing 😀

Unless you're at the Beach, just took a dip, and rolled in the sand, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well one reason I'm asking actually is because there is some sand on my floor, tracked in from outside. I was sitting/lying on the floor for a bit and so I may have gotten some on my clothes.

I have an ESD strap.

I try to avoid wearing certain clothes, like a fleece sweater. Fleece seems to pick up a ton of static or something....

I do wash my hands to avoid leaving too much crap on components. It shouldn't really matter too much, unless you're handling the parts wrong, like touching exposed pins/contacts and covering them with your crap.

Ok, I was talking to someone else today, and I have a couple of other questions related to stuff falling in the case while building:

1) I ate a chocolate bar wrapped in metallic foil;
2) I handled some aluminum foil while cooking something; and
3. I then worked on the inside of my PC.

What if some bits of foil landed on my shirt or pants? What if these metal bits fell into my case while working on it?

Does this sound like a reasonable scenario, or am I just being overly worried?

i think the stories are getting funnier and funnier, keepem coming!

in all seriousness unplug everything, tilt the case over to see if anything falls out, take a vacuum hose with a brush on the end of it and lightly vacuum over the entire inside of the case without touching any of the components and as long as it's unplugged it "should" be ok.

I'd lick everything, to get all the tasty chocolate off your parts.

Agreed, if you are THAT paranoid, just washed your darn hands. Nothing that a few seconds of scrubbing can't take care of.

I definitely washed my hands and dried them thoroughly before handling the PC. I'm more concerned about bits of metal foil or sand that may have fallen on my clothing, and then may be dislodged while the PC case is open. Am I just being paranoid?
