How capable are integrated graphics on laptops of running aero?

Yes and not really. As long as you have the RAM available to properly run Vista, you should have no problem running Aero with even the Intel GMA 950.
 
As i type this I'm running Aero on an xps m1210 with Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset...it's using 77MB of system memory at the moment...the experience is no different than my other machines running Aero with an 8800GT or a x1650xt.
 
Aero runs perfectly on my Lenovo/IBM T-60 with integrated graphics. I daresay that statistically, most laptops use integrated graphics, and the mass market dictates that Aero run properly.
 
Compaq Presario V5305WM with Sempron 2.0GHz, 2GB PC 2700 RAM, 128MB shared ATI Radeon Xpress x200. Vista HP.

Perfect Aero (not that I actually use it anyway LOL.)

I Google'd my GPU and discovered THIS WEB PAGE.

It says...

This is an onboard video chip and according AMD optimized for a good price/value. It is based on a X700 design but with less pixel- and vertex-pipelines...

ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 is hardly apt for gamers. Only old games like Quake 3 Arena can be played in 1024x768 with high/medium details fluently...

The graphic chip supports Windows Vista Aero surface and all 3D effects run fluently. Due to HyperMemory Aero is supported with high resolutions (tested with 1280x800 + 1920x1200).

Tecnically the chip has 4 pixel-pipelines and a texture unit (with 2 vertex shaders).

I've never had a problem with Aero... never even thought about it...

Anyway, there are LOTS of other GPUs listed on that page, so you might want to check it out! 😉

Hate to burst your bubble, but the GMA X3100 is listed as a Low End Class 5 GPU same as the rest of us!


Low End Graphics Cards - Only older games can be played fluently with these graphics chips (if they were not too demanding). Shared memory graphic cores in this category got the advantage of less heat production and longer battery runtimes. For office, internet, image correction, and video cutting tasks these graphics chips are still useable without any restrictions.

Then again, maybe Vista doesn't require much of a GPU to support "the highest level of Windows Aero* experience".

It's starting to sound that way... 😉
 
Aero runs acceptably well on my wife's new laptop with a GeForce 7150 integrated chipset. The only thing to watch out for is the PowerMizer on the Nvidia integrated graphics which will significantly downclock the chip if you are using agressive power saving options. It'll upclock when you need more power, but it can make the Vista experience a bit laggy as the processsor clocks up and down if you don't select a high performance power setting.

Aero Glass looks GREAT... period... exclamation!

Personally, I've been running WindowBlinds for years on my desktop - and still running it!

When I first got Vista (with my lappy) I thought Aero was butt fugly, but I've really grown to love it - kinda grows on you, I guess!

The fact that I don't feel compelled to install WindowBlinds on Vista says it all, IMHO... 😉
 
typically my rule of thumb for aero is as long as you have 2gb+ ram, your integrated will be fine provided it supports pixel shader 2.0+
