How can you tell if your CPU is fried? Will system powerup at all?

Having a weird problem, and never owned a AMD. I have a 1600XP.

My system won't startup or power up. I have tried a few different motherboards and still no success.
If the CPU is burned out.... will that keep your system from even turning on? When I hit my power button I get nothing. I have tried different cases/ps and 3 motherboards. Can't get my system to turn on ...... could it be the CPU?

Never had a CPU fail in 25 years...... go figure.

Thanks for any input.

If you have tried that many things, I am betting that your CPU is fried. I have had a Tbird fry on me, and it refused to post afterward. I think in general fried CPU's won't post, as a MB with no CPU won't post either. It is kind of a similar situation. Have you tried using different RAM? Hope this helps.

Are any of the fans coming on at all?

I have a dead Duron 700, and when i put into a motherboard the fans would come on but there would be no POST.

If none of the fans are coming on i would look to see if the power supply is dead (assuming you used the same PSU and different motherboards.

Good luck with getting this sorted :)

I just had a Duron 600 fry on me. The MSI board's Diagnostic LED says it's the CPU (4 red LEDs), and although all the fans turn on, there is definitely no posting. I don't remember any of systems ever having this many problems -- all began when I read and beleived the AT article about how stable MSI boards were -- I can't seem to keep more than one system up at a time. As soon as I fix one (replace part, clear CMOS, whatever), another system dies. :disgust:

BTW, are you sure the CPU heatsink fan is running and has a RPM monitor -- several newer boards will not allow you to post -- the board thinks your heatsink is toast if it can't determine what the RPM is and acts to prevent CPU frying. Also, you may wish to check the thermal compund/pad -- the duron (above) died, IMO, due to the pad getting worn off -- I will try a drop of silicone compound after i clean the cpu and heatsink off.

Hmmmmmmmmm

Nope nothing happens at all. No lights fans or otherwise. I spose I should check with a tester and see if the PS is giving off anything. Not even the PS fan comes on.

I guess it could be the MB not sending back to the PS to kick on.

I know the PS is fine as I have just used it on another system. I also tried the motherboard CPU combo in another case with no luck.

Just need to find out if the CPU (if fried) will put the motherboard into a NO STARTUP mode or keep everything from coming on. No lights fans nothing.

Thanks for the input.

Well....well.....well.... lookie here....

Here is EXACTLY what is happening... looks like it IS the motherboard. This is my 3rd motherboard from Newegg.

I am beginning to get a bad taste in me mouth with those guys.... I thought maybe last time they were perhaps pushing "b" goods/knockoffs...?

I have been building computers for over 20 yrs., and never had these kinds of problems. Perhaps the MB companies are really lacking in the QC these days.

I am going to pick up this same MB here local and see what I get.

Thanks.

Your first post seems to contradict your last  Perhaps you'd care to explain why as many of us can swear by Newegg and any critisim of them will need some serious evidence backing it to appear as other than BS ;)
