How can you tell if an ide cable is ata/100 capable?

I was looking through my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 gb 7200 rpm ata/100 documentation prior to install and it said that kits that contain a "u" in the code come with ata66/100 capable ide cable.

My kit comes with a cable that looks like it's got 80 wires, but the kit # doesn't have a "u" in it. Hard to believe that Maxtor would make an ata/100 drive and not include an ata/100 capable cable, but who knows.

Anyhoo... is there anyway I can tell for sure if it's ata/100 capable by just eyeing the cable? Nothing in the #s printed on the cable strike me as indicators, but I thought I'd ask the experts. I'd hate to have to shell out another $25 for a freaking cable that should have come with the drive.

(BTW, the was the Maxtor drive from CompUSA everyone was snapping up about a month ago)

Thanks for any help.

Frustratedly yours,

Sounds like it is a ATA 66/100 cable to me, tho I could be wrong. Besides, there is no HD that can get much above 66 mb/s (constant flow) anyway. So for the mean time ATA 100 and ATA 66 are comprible.

$25 bucks? You're paying $25 bucks for an IDE ribbon? I would be happy to sell you some more. ;)
Tidy profit margin I say.

well, if it meets ata66 specs, it's ata100 compatible.

who is to say ANY 80 wire\40 pin cable meets spec...

but generally, yes, it is ata100 capable, AS LONG AS your drives and controller can do oit ;-)
