I bought Blackhawk Down on Ebay for less than $10 shipped and the vendor was in Maylasyia. Got it ASAP! He has many other DVDs forsale but unless they are legit I will buy no more.

Yes, because I wouldn't want to support a pirate.

Are the chinese/manderin subtitles enabled as default? Thats how you can tell people selling DVDs on ebay are selling pirate versions, the description usually says "english audio with chinese/manderin subtitles (can be turned off)".

Less then $10 shipped is certainly suspect. I can understand just paying $10 for the DVD alone because of the latest Columbia house deal (3 DVDs for $7.30), but I doubt thats where it came from.

On the inner rims of the DVD, is there a rainbow colored inscription of authenticity? usually the name of the distributer.

English is enabled as default, but Chinese, Thai and French are other options.

Nope! There is a 'smudge' near the center as if something has been deleted. Heat and slight melting I think...

The easiest way to tell is that the DVD is Region Free (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

The pirate DVDs from Malaysia are actually packaged very well, so it can be difficult for inexperienced people to tell the difference.

The ones for $10 from Malaysia are NOT legit.

You also realise that he is making a killing off you?

The really poor counterfeits are the ones that just look like cam jobs or something. If it appears to be DVD quality both audio and video, then check the hologram. The chances of getting a legit DVD from Asia is next to none, though. Especially one encoded for Region 1 :p You're not even supposed to be playing any other region ;)

Looks like a copy then.

No hologram.

Dolby 5.1 is the only English option for audio.

The label on the DVD case is pretty good, BUT! The title on the edge? It's upside down in relation to the cover graphics! LOL!:D

It sounds great and the video is up to par, but I've not got the time to watch it yet...

The seller advertised it as a 'Dual Layer DVD' claiming better quality.

Hm, maybe I should buy these instead of downloading so many DivX's.

Dual Layer DVDs almost always imply a 1-to-1 rip of the original DVD, although with the Regioning removed.

Most places in Malaysia sell the single layer DVDs, which really are effectively DivX rips of the original. Quality is hit and miss. Then again, they cost half the price of the dual layered discs. Newest movies, which have not actually been released as DVDs, will be in single layer form.

No way in hell that its legit if its under 10$ and from Malaysia. Thats the center of DVD piracy in S.E. Asia, with street prices of DVD copies going for 5$ and under. Real DVD's in Malaysia cost about the same as in the United States. Foolproof way to tell if its a copy is to check the back. If its says "Region: All" or something to that effect then its definetly bootleg.

if it was a real dvd wouldn't it only work in a DVD player? If it's a vcd it would work in a cdrom also

Yeah I'm sure its next to none. If you've been in asia you would know you can get legit dvd, vcds, cds almost anywhere. You can get pirated ones just as easy as well. Its not next to none.
