how can you make a 12 volt to 19 volt adapter?

i want to connect my 19 volt DC power laptop to my car's 12 volt power out put... and i don't want to buy the laptop company's rip-off $80 12 volt to 19 volt converter... could I make this my self?

also, how much voltage difference can laptops tolerate? I thought of just hooking the car's 12 volt DC to the battery connection terminals in the laptop, with the battery taken out... (the battery for this laptop uses 10.8 volts) would this work?

thanks!

DON'T pull off that direct connection idea! :Q

If you have an AC adapter, you could probably pick up a small power inverter for $50 or less, that would work. You could make a 12v-19v adapter yourself, but God knows if it would be clean enough power for your computer. A cheap power inverter is probably your best bet.

Don't do it! Your car will put out anywhere from 8 to 30 volts (if not more) and the electrical systems in cars have lots of spikes, surges, brown outs, and other "dirty" current (turn your AC on and off with your headlights on and you'll see what I mean). You can search around on the web for voltage converters. It shouldn't be too hard to find a 19v to 12v converter. This is a good starting point. It has a 12v to AT power adapter you might be able to adapt.

You should be happy with the inverter. Don't forget that it can also be used for other small appliances like radios, TVs, coffee makers, etc.

Well, those cheap power inverters don't have very clean output either. But I don't think it would matter either way. Laptops have dedicated power supplies similar to ones in PCs don't they? That extra layer should buffer it enough for it to not make much difference.
