If they wanted to watch stuff that was entertaining, they'd ask "What's a funny show to watch?"
You don't hear people asking "What movie should I go see? Oh, and BTW, it has to be imported from Japan and animated, otherwise it's not kewl and I won't waste my time with it..." but that's what they mean.

1. Sounds like a person who saw 1 episode of DBZ and no other anime.
2. Anime has some of the best stories I've ever seen in a movie or TV show. Check out some other anime and you'll see that the majority of it is extremely well done and are very enjoyable to watch.

I ask whats good anime to watch? Why? Because I'm not Japanese, dont follow it, and I don't know jack sh1t about it. I have no desire to learn a bunch of Japanese and read the mangas or anythign of that sort. I just want something entertaining to watch.
You dont hear peole saying "What movie should I go see?" I do often. Heck when I go to the video store I often spend like 15min.+ just looking at videos trying to decide which one to rent.

Do you watch any cartoons? Disney animated films? How about CG animated films? Who cares how its done, as long as its good and entertaining.

It's no more stupid than asking "what's a cool HK gun opera?" or "which samurai movies besides Chushingura?" or for recommendations in any other genre from military SF novels to celtic music.

oh wait, you're thinking about pokemon and stuff that little kids all watch nowadays... there are good animes and made for kid ones...
last time i checked, i thought Transformers were imported from japan and animated.....

I'm not a huge fan of Anime, but I do like it when I see it. The biggest aspect that attracts me to it are the stories. The work of Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc...) was my first exposure to the stuff; I was very impressed not with just the animation, but the method of storytelling. That led me on to other Anime. I have since been exposed to and have been very impressed with series like Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne, again, because of the stories that are being told.
There is Anime that I don't like. Dragonball Z and Tenchi Muyo come to mind.
Anime, when done properly, reminds me of a normal, live-action movie, but just shown in an animated form.

Funny, I don't remember any of those things being in Lain and Perfect Blue (other than the hallucinations). I _DO_ however remember that in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Lord of the Rings, and Mary Poppins 🙂
