CDs are like 10 bucks these days. They used to be 13-17 dollars 20 YEARS AGO!!! Factor in inflation and the cost of music is incredibly low.

What we need to be bitching about is the crappy recordings and why hi-resolution formats aren't more prevalent.

I won't buy them unless brand new releases are $3-4, and anything that has been out a while is $1-2.

Same with movies. A new release blu-ray should not be more than $5.

You're doing something wrong if you're paying that much for CDs. You should get at least 50 for 10 bucks

I don't complain about the cost of physical media; I complain about the quality of modern popular music. I also complain about the cost of digital music from some of the major players, because you get a reduced experience that costs the same or more than a physical CD.

That's a very valid complaint and kinda what I was getting at with the OP.

Dont know where you are getting a cd for $10, but it must be from the bargain bin. The last time I was at the mall a few days ago most of the "A list" titles were $18. Not that I would want to listen to what passes for A list these days but anyway...

You were in the MALL. That's the worst place to buy anything. It's always the most expensive there.

What about the fact that all dynamic range has been eliminated from music released during the last 10-15 years? Search youtube for "the loudness war" for a good example of this.

Most of the consumer base doesn't care and just keeps right on buying. Most of the consumer base doesn't use MP3s and computers to listen to music.

Whether it's on CD or .mp3, music today is delivered in ones and zeros. We have an entire generation of kids that believe that they are entitled to anything digital, free of charge.

Well one thing, it has been PROVEN that there was price fixing going on twenty years ago on CDs. So yeah they were were more expensive because of price fixing. The music business model is broken. All there is to it.

I buy a good amount of music but non of it very popular so I don't end up paying a lot for it.

BTW, if we don't watch out, Harvey might come in here and explain to us all why CDs SUCK for music.

There are two things that annoy me about music prices...
First, why does a digital download generally cost about as much as the physical medium?
Second, why does it cost so much to buy music created long ago, often by a dead artist, especially when I may have already purchased it 10 different ways already? The studios sure as hell can't talk about promotion costs here. This is a straight up cash grab.

You would think at some point the music would enter the public domain, but apparently not.

Life of the artist + 70 years (at least until the record industry lobbies Congress to extend terms again). The public domain is no more. :(

I don't complain about the price of CDs, I can easily justify spending up to $20 on a quality album, because I'll probably listen to it dozens of times and get a lot of enjoyment out of it. But I never buy an album for just one or two songs, that's just a waste of money, especially now that consumers have the ability to purchase individual tracks from various online stores.

This is why CD sales have dropped so sharply IMO. Of course the industry claims it's due to piracy, though.
