How can this be? (cheap cell phones)

So my sis and her husband go shopping today and come back with brand new cell phones (one for each of them) - the Siemens M55, colour screen, SMS/MMS/GPRS/Polymorphic ringtones etc included. Overall very nice phone, but they told me that they got a discount on it, it cost them only $5 each! $11.5 after tax for 2 of those phones! And there is no fixed term, just a monthly plan.

That's freaking amazing.

i don't think a 1 yr contract is a bad thing anymore because most providers give you a few days to cancel, plus there is that new law. in other words, anyone can go to an asian cell phone shop and pick up a really really nice phone like the samsung e715 for free with a 1 yr contract.

I played around with it, and its a pretty decent phone. Buttons are small, yes, but then the whole thing is tiny (its about the length of my index finger)

Well many stores give expensive phones away free. They make it up in volume.
