How can they make such a good book like the Running Man into such a horrible movie?!

I read the book about about 6 months ago and loved it. Now the movie is on and I hardly even can tell it's the same story! It's extremely bad!! Has anyone else seen this?

I have never seen the movie or read the book, but I saw the commerciaol for it today and it looked pretty cool.

They do that with most Stephen King books. I was really disappointed with the movie myself. The only movies of his that I have seen that were like the book were Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me (based on The Body)Those two movies ou can either read the book or watch the movie. No need to do both.

The Shining didn't exactly duplicate the book, but both the book and the movie are excellent (and an exception). 😉

Didn't like "The Stand". It's just too big a story for TV, even as a mini-series.

Best translations to the big screen: "The Dead Zone" and "Misery".

King books are tough to do because so many characters have these constant internal monologues, ya know?

I honestly can't think of any movie that doesn't pale in comparison to the book (excepting Shawshank, which sort of doesn't count as it was a short story).

Perfect example - Dean Koontz' "Watchers", and the film version. Day and night.

Yeah, that movie was not good at all, compared to the book. The only movies I liked were Stand By Me and Misery. IT wasn't too bad, and the movie of The Shining (Stanley Kubrick version), while it does not stick to the book, is a classic on it's own.

Now The Stand I despised. How dare they pick Molly Ringwald to play Frannie? That just ruined it for me. And it's weasels in the corn, not rats in the corn. I hate when they take a classic, and slaughter it for TV. Ok, all done ranting now. 😉

GirlFriday,

When talking about the Stand it was much worse than a slaughter. Now the mini-series they did for IT was a slaughter. The Shining was a good movie on its own.

yakko: I agree about IT, I just have always had a thing for John Ritter. 😉 Actually though, I have not read IT in a long time, I need to get to the bookstore and buy that one again. That's what I love about Stephen King, you can read his books over and over again, and still find something new everytime. I have read The Stand probably well over fifty times, and it is still one of my favorite books.

Running Man was a great flick and one of Ahnuld's best. Dis it not.

I'm playing the Running Man Home Game right now. 🙂

Two books that were much better than the movies:

Congo - the book was awesome, but the movie is suck

Jurassic Park - the movie was good, but the book was MUCH better...

It wasn't too bad I thought. Definately pretty cheesy though.

On this same topic, If any of you watched the first part of the DUNE mini-series on SciFi, what did you guys think? I thought they did an excellent job. Stayed close to the book, pretty good acting, good special effect. Only real negative was I thought they had the guy that played Baron Harkonnen overplay his role a bit.

pretty much all of Crichton's books are buttloads better than their film counterparts.
Sphere, Lost World, 13th Warrior (movie was pretty good actually, but the book was better)

When Arnnie was taunting that electro-guy (it's been a while) in the lit up car...

"Hey lightbulb!"
"Follow me Christmas Tree!"

LOL

One reason that Stand By Me, Shawshank, and The Green Mile were so good as movies was because they were taken almost directly from the books. Especially Shawshank. I read the book (novella, whatever) after I had seen the movie, and they were practically word-for-word the same.

Now, I'll just go back to hoping that King finishes the Dark Tower series 🙂
