How can someone work 200+ hours in two weeks

We in the west have had it too easy for too long... i was working the oil patch in Algeria about 13 years ago; we'd fly in, work about 12 hour days everyday for 35 days and then were flown home for 21 days with full wages... that might sound not too bad, except that the food sucked, there was no social life and pretty near zero entertainment. but the money was good. hell, it was grrreat, which is why i did it for 2 years.

at least i was an engineer... i also came across some Philipino workers (semi-skilled) in Saudi who would work 12 hour days nonstop for 11 months and then get a month off... they seemed to work for what appeared to be a pittance, but one of the guys said he was pulling at least three times what he could do back home...

It's really not THAT hard, I was working 80 hours in 5 days when I had two full time jobs.

Everybody reacted like I was crazy, but after the first week or two it's a routine & you don't even notice anymore.

I've pulled 100+ hour weeks before too. It sucks... go into work; it's dark. get out of work; it's dark.

The most I've worked in a single week is almost 120 hours. That was a one time thing right after sobig (I think that was the one around Aug. 2003) and students were moving back on campus that weekend. I didn't try to work that many, I just had 2 projects that HAD to be complete before move-in weekend and then another 3 projects got added related to the worm. I didn't even notice the time go by and my boss would ended up having to remind me that I hadn't taken a break to eat that day.

I guess I should say that most of my friends left town a few months before that and my girlfriend left for a semester in Spain that previous week so I didn't really know what to do with my time otherwise.

I've done it. Working minimum wage for a temp shop at that. In Miami in '89, I couldn't get a job anywhere but the daily work daily pay place (the kind of place that employs crack addicts).

I was a month behind in my rent and eating bisquick for meals. Needing the money badly is a real motivator.
