We in the west have had it too easy for too long... i was working the oil patch in Algeria about 13 years ago; we'd fly in, work about 12 hour days everyday for 35 days and then were flown home for 21 days with full wages... that might sound not too bad, except that the food sucked, there was no social life and pretty near zero entertainment. but the money was good. hell, it was grrreat, which is why i did it for 2 years.
at least i was an engineer... i also came across some Philipino workers (semi-skilled) in Saudi who would work 12 hour days nonstop for 11 months and then get a month off... they seemed to work for what appeared to be a pittance, but one of the guys said he was pulling at least three times what he could do back home...
