How can someone test thier vision?

Does anyone know a way for someone to test thier vision without having to go to a doctor. Like do you know what size the letters are on the vision chart and how far away you stand, or something like that.

They've got those signs all over Wal*Mart, and the mall, too, where I live. It has an eye chart and a sticker on the floor that tells you where to stand.
