You know, my parents make a decent amount of money, but it seems like we're always at the end of the line when it comes to the newest and greatest things. I don't know how much they make, but I know that it's enough for us to get by, but it's not like we're rich or anything. Like like those vietnamese folks down the street -- they own a janitorial service -- who have a huge house and own 4+ cars. I mean, hell, just last year that put a new roof on their house and paid for it with cash.

I really wish that everybody could make truckloads of money. My parents are good folks and deserve better than middle-of-the-road. They're always been pretty frugal, but just don't have the cash to send me to school with a new car, buy my books and pay for my tuition.

Is there some sort of secret to making lots of money? Is it good ideas? Investing? Capitalising on opportunity?

They max out their credit cards and buy houses with loans from the mob at ridiculous interest rates.

The way to get richest (but it involves some risk) is to start your own company and work harder than everyone else for the first few years, reinvesting all your profits into the company. Once it takes off (if it takes off), you riiiide your way to the top. See: Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Gates.

Crime and inheritance are the 2 most popular methods in america. For best results, have your parents do the crime and let you inherit it

There are only 3 ways of creating wealth:

1) Think of an idea that benefits society as a whole.
2) Speculation
3) I forget what #3 is.

Any Econ Master's or PhDs here?

You're including Gates in there? That better be the first William Gates, the Banker. Bill of Microsoft fame came from an incredibly wealthy family. His private HS tuition was more than his Harvard tuition.

grass is always greener

but if your folks are as good as you believe, learn from their humility and feel fortunate for their parentage
thats a kind of wealth too

if you're worried about your own immediate future don't be
this is the best country in the world to move on credit

btw, I'm a business/IT major and do own my own business (at 22 y/o) so hopefully I'll be rich in no time. Er. I mean poor. Dirt poor in no time.

i'm surprised not everyone recognized the parody ;)

seriously, if I lived in a big house with my parents and we had 4 cars(2 1995 and 2 2003!) and NO debt I think I would consider my parents very well off.
