I have an original copy of "crouching tiger, hidden dragon" that one of my friends bought for me from Taiwan. I have two laptops that have dvds (one mac and one pc) and also two table top dvd players (pioneer and sony). Is there anyway I can watch this disc on any of the machines available to me? I have absolutely no knowledge of what to do with dvds from other regions, if you need any additional info, feel free to ask :)

Most software players such as PowerDVD should allow you to change the region up to 5 times without reghacking or anything.

My player allows me to change the region code 4 times but all I have is one region 3 disc... doesn't seem worth it to switch just to watch one disc, the rest of my collection is region 1

Maybe I should switch to region 3 and then encode this thing into divx or something. Is there anyway to put a divx file onto a vcd and have it play in a regular dvd player?

of course they can't play divx.

you can encode them to mpeg1 of course, in proper vcd format.

whether or not you can play region 3 depends on your equipment too ya know... i hate hardware limits =(

buy an older dvd drive. I've got a 4.8 X toshiba myself, and that is region unlocked. Can change the region as many times as i want, win2k even has a little option for it. Lots of the older driver (less than 8x ) can do this, or have some patch that will let you. Thats why i dont get why people are so hyped up about 16x dvds that you cant even unlock

Software region changers like DVD Genie won't help at all if the drive itself is hardware region-controlled. Either find a region-free firmware (either official or hacked) for your drive, or like Hans007 says, get an older drive which is region-free.

Check this site for RPC-1 compatibility options of your drives:

The Firmware Page

Remember to read the infos thouroughly, I destroyed a Sony drive using the wrong FW the 1st time.
