How can I use WinRAR to make a files smaller????????????

I have a 1.09GB file that I need to get down to 950mb to fit my USB stick

I have winrar but i've never used it to compress before.

What do I do??

Right-click the file in explorer, select "Add to Archive...", the window pops up, make sure compression is selected and change it to maximum, go to town. Some files cannot be compressed very much though, so you may not get it down enough to fit.

If you don't have winrar on the other machine, you have two options. Either set the format as a zip (which XP and many other programs support), or check the "Create SFX archive" box (creates a self extracting archive that doesn't need any other programs)

and if its a video file, aint nothing gonna get smaller. Video files are already compressed to their maximum. (you might see a 1% file size decrease though)

It might with an older codec. Otherwise a possible solution is to remux to exclude extraneous audio tracks and/or use a more efficient container (or none at all) and/or cut out intro and credits.
