I bought a new 80G Maxtor 7200RPM HD recently and wanna use it for my pc. But only 32G can be recognized. The configuration is as follows:
mobo: asus P2B-f
cpu : pII 400
Is there any way to get around this 32G limitation? Thank you!!!

Your are being limited by a jumper setting on the hard drive. Check into it and you should be able to figure it out.

Just buy a Promise ata100 or ata133 pci card.

Quick & easy, and you will be running at ata100 or 133 unlike your slow ata33 onboard controller.

Thank you, is there any hot deal for it? Maybe not the right board to ask though... :)

Hmm, you might be limited by the IDE controller, but I thought that Windows 98 had a limitation of 32GB with FAT32 or something like that? I could be (and probably am) wrong, but then again... ;)

Try in the For sale forum. I seen a promise ata100 card there for 15$ shipped.

jliechty is probably right. What O.S. are you running?

Also, be sure to flash your bios before installing a new HDD. (eliminates 90% of all HDD install problems)

I had a BX board with a BIOS limitation on hard drive size. Take a look at the Asus website and see if there are any BIOS updates for your motherboard.

I bought my WD 80gig early last year when it came out for my p2 300 running on an asus 440bx board and upgrading bios didnt help. buying a Promise and SIIG ata 100 card and it wouldnt even post on my comp ... so i stuck an ata66 card in there and voila ... i hope u can get ur card to work with an ata100 card :D

BTW: I suggest u invest in an ata card cuz u'll get much faster transfer speeds as well as have 3 more ide device to set up in ur comp

just my 2 cents

I just recently bought a Maxtor 80gig retail HDD that comes with a Maxtor (Promise) ata133 controller card. It took awhile to get everything working properly on my ancient k6-3 400 on a Asus p5a mobo - but now that it's done i'm very happy.

One thing though - my HDD whines pretty good at times and it can get very annoying. Sometimes I wished I would have gotten a fluid bearning model.
