I know...this should be old hat to many of you.

But here's the deal...
I am upgrading a PC for a guy, and it's an HP Vectra VL P2-266....I am trying to put a P2-400 in it as I had one here laying around.

But the MB only has jumpers that go to 366....and the 400 won't boot all the way....so even though it should...
I think I may have to cover one of the pins to get this thing to boot to 366 or "unlock it".

Any ideas guys ?

I will trade this P2-400 to anyone for a P2-366 :)

The board may be an LX chipset that only supports 66 MHz FSB. The fastest PII 66 MHz FSB is a 333. You may get a PPGA Celeron 533 to work.

You maybe right about that...I think it is a 66mhz front bus.

The jumpers go 200, 233, 266, 300, 333, and 366....but no 400 :(

And 366 would be fine I guess, but the it won't boot.

HELP !!!!

you cant unlock a PII. (some models can go down in multiplier, but i think that quit with the PII 300)

the fastest a PII 400/100 could go in a LX/FX/EX motherboard is 66x4=266

so, you'll need to find a BX/ZX board, or, you could run up to a celeron 533PPGA (technically, but who knows if it will work)

ive got a funky LX board here too :p
it recognized a celeron 400 as a 300, and then hung on post., oh well.

Right...that HP board is based on the Intel 440LX chipset, max bus speed of 66 mhz, of which the fastest supported processor is the 333. The cpu speed is set by the switch settings on the mb, and they max out at 366, even though there is no 366 processor available. Setting the switches at 366 may speed things up....I have a similar board in my Kayak but am a little squeamish about trying to eek out that last little bit of performance from my dual 333's with switch settings.
