How can I underclock my x1950?

My x1950 is idling around 60C so when I try and play a game it cuts the video output and gives a GPU error.

How can I underclock to try and prevent this from happening? I see how to overclock with catalyst (I download the latest version which supports the x1950, 10.2) but I can't find out how to underclock.

Any suggestions?

remove heatsink, clean off crappy dried out ancient TIM, put on good TIM, reinstall heatsink, problem solved.

If you really want to go all out you can lap the GPU and heatsink at the same time.

I wouldn't be surprised if just blowing some compressed air through the fan fins was enough to solve this actually.

When I had my Sapphire x1950 pro I was always cleaning the fan, it would collect those dust bunnies like nobody's business lol ;)

I decided it was time to upgrade when it reached 70c when I was playing Supreme Commander which I guess was too demanding for it!

You say the idle is 60 deg. That is high but not totally unreasonable. What is the temp under load? It could be that the card itself is defective, not related to temperature.

And as the earlier poster said, Rivatuner should work to underclock. I am not sure that would lower the temps much though. No offense intended, but maybe you should just replace the card. If the rest of the computer is fairly modern, a 100 dollar card like a 4850 or GTS250 should be better in performance.

Tried that

Under load it hangs, video cuts out, and it gives a GPU error like I said in the OP.

No reason to buy a new card when this one should work perfectly fine. I did borrow a gtx260 a buddy had though to get going in the mean time.
