How can I turn my computer into an alarm clock?

My alarm clock finally died (can only take so much of a beating), and I'd much rather just change my current computer into an alarm clock since it sits right next to my bed anyway. Is there a good program that does this? I don't want it to play music, though, because that doesn't wake me up.

Does anyone else do this? How well does it work?

UPDATE:

This is one, from the thread that Konichiwa linked to, is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. However, does anyone else know where I can get better sounds?

I think alligator clips attached to one's nipples is much more effective.

Yes, but my mp3s are music, and that doesn't wake me up. I don't have mp3s of annoying beeping sounds just laying around on my computer... do you?

or you could use the Resumer plugin for winamp and set a scheduled task to start winamp when you want to get up.

i'm sure there's an alarm plugin for winamp too

I just blasted bare naked ladies - alcohol for my alarm clock a few years back.

Its the most violent, quick, loud start to a song that I could find. It would scare the living ****** out of me in the morning.

The downside to having a computer alarm clock is that you crank up the volume. Sometimes you experience popups of some sort, or perhaps an IM, or some program that has noise that suddenly wakes up at 3 in the morning.

I had one once. I used a wave file of a warning alarm from like a nuclear plant and damn it was scary the first few times it went off. One time I set it in a drunken stupor for 4am and somehow manage to turn my speakers all the way up before I passed out. I didn't hear it go off or if I did I didn't get up but the next morning my 3 roommates wanted to beat the sh*t out of me.

I've used windows scheduler for my alarm clock before.

I'd have Wizmo turn the volume up on my speakers, play my alarm sound file, and then turn the volume back down.

True story - when I was living in the dorms my freshman year, me and my roommate both set our PC alarm clocks to play the Smurfs theme song EVERY_SINGLE_FRIGGIN_MORNING.

Needless to say nothing was a bigger motivator than that the first 5 seconds or so of that song... just the most insanely obnoxious and annoying beginning to any theme song ever. Arghhh and then the "la la lalalala" parts... arghhhhhhhhhhh just thinking about it is driving me insane.

Oh, and nothing was funnier than when we forgot to turn off the alarm on the weekends. Nothing beats a confused, half-drunk terrified girl jumping up out of one our beds in a complete panic...

Ah good times...
