The dvr (Motorola DCX3400M) has HDMI output. How can I get the shows off of it onto my computer?

You will need to find a way to circumvent/crack the HDCP protection, then use a capture card.

It's better to just save the files to a NAS if you want to distribute them to other devices later.

I use my computer to put the movies into digital files that I save on my NAS. I use Akrock to rip the discs. If you want to capture over the air broadcasts, you can add a tv card to the PC and add an antenna or a cable input, save the shows on the HD or SSD and upload them to your NAS.

Op was asking about getting recorded shows off his DVR, which is encrypted.

Yes, I answered that it is better to use a PC to record the shows and toss the DVR in the trash bin because it is encrypted and low res that gets upscaled.
