I have a Motorola DCX3400M DVR and I want to transfer a couple of shows off of it. Anybody know how I can do that?

This is hard to do. You'd think it would be EASIER but it's not. This is the down side of the new era of TV, vs the good ol analog/VCR era. There does not seem to be any easy way to archive stuff.

What you need is something like this:

https://www.amazon.ca/AGPtek®HD-Cap...&qid=1476586646&sr=8-2&keywords=game+recorder

It will record HDMI playback to a USB stick. Problem with this device alone though is there is a tech called HDCP on HDMI that will actually stop it from working, not sure exactly how it works, but it can be defeated with a HDMI splitter. I think you need to make sure the splitter is HDCP compliant. I just got lucky when I tried and first one I ordered worked. My dad likes to keep hockey games archived, especially stanley cup games. He even has some on VHS from like the 80's. So I had experimented to see if I can get him set up to continue to do that and got it going. He had them all on his PVR but then it was getting full. So way I set him up is that the PVR/cable box (it's same device) plugs into the HDMI splitter, one port to the TV, the other to the recorder. Whatever he sees on TV records, basically. So he can play something off the DVR then hit record.

That's how I do it.

FireWire and an old xp machine.

I have a Motorola dct6412 I think.

It's sucks cause some channels wont copy right or you get 30 minutes of nothing.

It's easier to use a capture card.

And you can use avidemux to erase the commercials.

My U-verse boxes all have video/audio out RCA jacks on the back, I have no idea what would happen if I ran them into my standalone DVD recorder. The biggest drawback is the recorder is SD but for some things (like NFL games) SD still looks really good on my "32 CRT Sharp TV which I REFUSE to throw out!. The tube has not shown a bit of softness despite being 13 yrs old, the only thing I've had to do is pull off the yoke connector and clean the pins, this was a quality built set!.

The component outputs should be HDCP-free and the quality, I think, should be just as good as HD although I'd have to check that. You'd just need component (as opposed to composite/RCA) inputs on your destination/recording device.

Of course the other thing you can do is umm "find" the programs already uploaded somewhere on the interwebs. wink, wink.

This. I have a workstation with a Hauppauge Colossus in it connected to a DirecTV HD receiver using the component outputs. I can dump shows I want to keep off both my DirecTV DVR's with that setup.

play them on your tv and record the screen on your iphone

Funny thing is with all the security crap they try to do to stop people from recording, this is always going to work. Idealy you setup a decent video camera on a tripod and frame the TV well, and have proper lighting and essentially you could set it up to record anything at a decent quality. You could hook the audio system directly to the camera too and not use the mic. All settings on camera would be set to manual so different scene changes don't start to change the exposure and such.

Or if you're good with electronics and programming you just tap into the LCD driver circuit and translate the data directly to a known video format.

I have Comcast and Play-On Media server. Web portal provides all network show with little or no commercials (mostly removed. You can pause but no Forward.) This negates the need for DVR at all. It also gets any network I provide credentials for and manages local library. It also allows you to record any web video for later perusal. Netflix, Crackle, Xfinity, Hulu, Amazon and so forth. You keep a list of what and where you are in episodes or binge blast anyway you want.
Only bad thing (well 2) is Better than low def but not the knockout of OTA or high level connection and sometimes (rare but does happen) streams break and you may have to begin again. (still no forward unless you pause let build up and then jump increasing disruptive stream.)
