How can I transfer files over a LAN?

I have 8GB of video files my wife wants on her PC. I assume the easiest way to transfer the files is through a LAN? Anyway, I used the wizard to set up a LAN between our PCs. She was able to play the files, but not transfer them. What did I do wrong?
And when I was done, I just plugged our PCs back into the internet. Is this safe, do i have to change the settings again?
Thanks so much

Hmm.. If it is playable over the Network you should be able to copy.

Map the drives ( http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html#map ) and use WinExplorer to copy.

If you are behind a Router on a private LAN you can use the Internet and share (that is the whole point of having a network).

Thanks for the reply Jack.
The process was a bit tricky as her PC is in Japanese. Anyway, I could play the files, but when I right-click-copyied it to her desktop, it only copied the file icon, not the files. There didn't appear to be a "download" option provided.
Must I map my drive and then copy? I had a bad experience a couple years ago trying to network our PCs. I was hoping to just transfer the files with the least hassle.
thanks again

Figured it out. Had to copy the files as a group, NOT the folder they are in.
Cheers

BTW, is there a way to transfer files between PCs without having to mess with the network settings?

external hard drive or online site. if you are going to do stuff like this a lot you could think about a NAS which is just an external hard drive with a network port, but that is about the same as what you just did.

4GB Flash Drives go for $30-$40.

8GB Flash Drives go for $80 -$100.

As a frame of reference, years ago I paid about $600 for a 60MB HD.
