How can I train my dog to behave and "heel" during walks?

Pinch collars have proven very effective for us. They reputedly hurt much less than they look like they do. You need patience, as well. It takes time.

If you have a difficult time, you may want to try obedience courses.

I personally don't like the choke chains especially the pronged one. I used one of these and it worked pretty well once the dog gets use to it. There are a couple different kind like that out there and some are better than other.

Man... we have these neighbours who use to take their rotty pups for walks... and at every light, they would yank the collar and make them heel... if they went to far ahead, they were yanked back... quite forcibly mind you. At first i thought it was so cruel, but after a few months, and the pups were bigger, boy, were they soooo obedient. They ALWAYS walked beside the neighbours, and sat down at the street crossings. And they're soooo nice and playful.

It's true what they say... a dog is only as smart as it's master.

Pronged collars are not choke collars.
Unfortunately, the pinch collar looks like some sort of medieval torture device. As a result, the uneducated person is often afraid of it. A good way to overcome this apprehension is to put a pinch collar on an owner?s arm or leg and give a correction so that he or she experiences what the dog will feel. The effect is similar to poking yourself in the neck with your fingers. When compared to the strangling action of the choke collar, owners prefer the pinch collar.

Pronged (pinch) collars are much different than they appear, and are a very valuable tool for properly training a dog.

I've tried those before, but my dog would get super-depressed when we used it, and she would rub her head in the grass to try and get it off... It wasn't really working for her.

She is about a 50 pound german shepard mix.

Thats how its done. My mom and I did it with our rotties and she can heel both of them off the chain side by side going down the street. They have both won several obedience competitions.
